As the U.S. begins its national 250th birthday celebrations, the U.S. Mint has issued a set of special coins featuring legends of history. Five new quarters show four Presidents—George Washington, Thomas Jefferson, James Madison, and Abraham Lincoln—and a pilgrim couple. But that wasn’t the original plan. The Biden administration had approved designs featuring icons and changemakers through history like Ruby Bridges, Frederick Douglass and women suffragists. After President Trump retook office in 2025, his Treasury department axed the designs, opting for the more straightforwardly patriotic imagery. Controversially, they’ve also proposed a $1 coin featuring Trump’s own image, which would be the first time a living president has appeared on currency. Michael Smerconish talks with Douglas Mudd, curator and museum director for the American Numismatic Association, about the change in plans and what happens when the “war on wokeness” comes to the niche world of coin collecting.
